I don’t really like blueberries

I love strawberries

I dislike everything about the way a blueberry looks and tastes.  They’re messy and their juice stains everything it touches.   I used to almost gag eating them, but I eat them anyway.  I also eat strawberries.  I love the beautiful bright, red, sweet tasting strawberry.  Strawberries are one of life’s simple pleasures.  Both of these foods are very good for you – they are power-packed antioxidant machines.

If somebody held a gun to my head and told me I must choose between them, I would drop my pleasant friend the strawberry and keep the blueberry.  I would make that choice because the blueberry provides more nutritional value than the strawberry.  Fortunately, I don’t have to make the choice and I can get the benefits of both.  If the blueberry was not a blueberry with all its unpleasant side effects, it might be worthless.  The blueberry has a nature and I respect that, even if I find it distasteful.  There are some things I can do to make the consumption of the blueberry more pleasing and I do them.  I am no longer seven and I choose to be an adult and get value wherever I can find it.

People are like blueberries and strawberries.  Some are bright, beautiful, and just pleasant to be around.  Some are not.  I don’t become a seven year old when I deal with people instead of fruit and neither do you.  I recognize value where I see it and I choose to consume it while doing what I can to mitigate those things I find distasteful.  I also recognize that maybe what makes something about them distasteful, may also be at least part of the reason why they are valuable.  Like blueberries, people have a nature and it’s a total package.  You don’t get to pick and choose the best of each and create your perfect person.

If you want to be successful and provide maximum value yourself, you are making a grave mistake if you choose to ignore the blueberries because you don’t like them.  You are also abdicating your responsibility to your employer (even if you are self-employed).  Instead of avoiding the blueberries, just consume them and if you must hold your nose while you do it.
